RLM Talks: Avoid Humanity On How They’re The Only Band That Can Make You Laugh During a Circle Pit

Established in 2018, the band’s name seems like good advice these days. Avoid Humanity’s unique blend of hardcore and death metal pushed them to the forefront of the Romanian underground metal scene. Their debut album, Apex of Impurity, was released just before lockdown hit, and is a scathing critique of where society stands right now.

Would love to start off with an introduction to your band. Who is Avoid Humanity?

Avoid Humanity is a 4 piece band made of introverts who didn’t find a better way to express themselves than to shout odd things at 12 people in crappy bars. We play a crossover between deathcore, hardcore, and death metal, so everybody is a bit reticent at first, but luckily Andrei has a super funny way of winning the crowd over.

If you had to pick one of your tracks for a new listener to check out, what would it be and why?

It’s hard to say. We have fast songs and slow songs, but if I had to pick one, it would be “I am death”. It’s one of our faster songs with a bouncy intro so the crowd seems to love it even when they hear it for the first time.

If you can have your listeners and fans remember one thing about yourselves, what would you want them to remember you by and why?

The only band that can make you laugh during a circle pit.

Please tell us, who can ‘Awaken the Chimera’?

Typhon and Echidna. I’m sure they’re a lovely couple.

Is there a lyrical concept for your music? If so, what is it?

In the beginning, it was predominantly focused on social, individual matters such as inner struggles and the negative parts of society. Now, the concept has moved towards more subjective and metaphor-driven lyrics as you will come to see on our future material.

How hard is it to keep everyone happy? You have all these combinations of ideas, songs, and people. Is it hard to keep all the members happy?

You’re implying that we actually have fans to keep happy 🤣. As a band playing metal in Romania, I think we made a semi-conscious choice that we have a limited number of people easily won over by our music. I think our chill attitude towards making people happy is our strong point. If people vibe with our shows that’s awesome, but we know we’re an acquired taste.

Who amongst you has the oddest concert habits? We’ve seen and heard it all, so how does Avoid Humanity rank up?

Vlad likes to speak Mandarin just to confuse us.

What does it mean to you to be playing Rock la Mures for the first time?

I think it’s just amazing that we got a chance to play at Rock la Mures. I don’t know if people realize this, but getting a slot at a metal festival in Romania is not easy these days. Like all these legacy bands are gobbling every bit of stage time leaving little room for upcoming bands to access some new crowds. I understand that festival organizers have to deal with razor-thin margins, but if they do not give a chance to newer bands, I don’t think there will be anyone to replace Iris or Cargo when they retire. Oh wait you got cover bands….

What should we expect from your RLM show?

Oh my bad, I misread MLR. We will play some new songs, some of them quite different from what you’d expect from us.
